In this article, we’ll explore the mold temperature controllers offered by Wensui Machinery’s heating solutions and compare the key differences between water-type and oil-type mold temperature controllers. Mold temperature controllers (MTCs) were initially developed for controlling the temperature in injection molds, but over time, they’ve found widespread use across many industries.

Currently, MTCs are primarily classified into two types: water-type mold temperature controllers and oil-type mold temperature controllers. These are often referred to as water temperature controllers and oil temperature controllers, respectively, and can deliver temperature control precision up to ± 0.1 ° C. MTCs are essential across several industries, including plastic molding, die casting, rubber tire manufacturing, roller production, chemical reactors, and even processes like bonding and mixing. In essence, MTCs are designed to control and maintain consistent mold temperatures. They generally regulate both heating and cooling processes. The common mediums for heat transfer are either water or oil.

How a Mold Temperature Controller Works.
The MTC is made up of several key components: a water tank, heating and cooling system, power transmission system, liquid level control system, temperature sensor, and an injection port. The pump within the power transmission system circulates the heated fluid from the water tank (which contains a built-in heater and cooler) to the mold and then back into the tank. A temperature sensor monitors the fluid temperature, relaying this data to the controller, which adjusts the fluid temperature and, consequently, the mold’s temperature. If the mold temperature exceeds the set value, the controller opens a solenoid valve to bring in more cooling water, ensuring the mold temperature returns to the desired range. Conversely, if the temperature drops below the set value, the controller activates the heater to warm it back up.
Water-Type Mold Temperature Controller
A water-type mold temperature controller uses hot water as the heat transfer medium. Under normal conditions, the boiling point of water is 100 ° C. Without pressurization, the water temperature controller can only regulate temperatures up to 100 ° C. However, in practice, by increasing the pipeline pressure, the control temperature can be raised to as high as 180 ° C, significantly expanding the controller’s range of applications.
Oil-Type Mold Temperature Controller
An oil-type mold temperature controller utilizes heat transfer oil as the heat exchange medium. These controllers are typically employed in applications where the working temperature exceeds 200 ° C, with maximum operating temperatures reaching up to 350 ° C.

Key Differences Between Water-Type and Oil-Type Mold Temperature Controllers:
Heat Transfer Medium:
- Water-type controllers use water, which is suitable for lower temperature ranges (up to 180 ° C with pressurization).
- Oil-type controllers use oil, making them more appropriate for higher temperatures (200 ° C to 350 ° C).
Operating Temperature:
- Water-type controllers have a lower maximum operating temperature.
- Oil-type controllers can manage much higher temperatures, making them suitable for more demanding applications.
Application Range:
- Water-type MTCs are commonly used in less heat-intensive processes.
- Oil-type MTCs are ideal for applications that require maintaining much higher mold temperatures.

In summary, both water-type and oil-type mold temperature controllers serve the same fundamental purpose of maintaining consistent mold temperatures, but they cater to different temperature ranges and process requirements.
